Philosophy
We believe that visual art can help us perceive and understand the natural world. Our art work, teaching, and writing are dedicated to promoting environmental awareness.

Like the poet we see beauty in nature but only through direct experience of plants, butterflies, bees, and other creatures, will we grow to know intimately the life forms we depend on to service our ecosystems and sustain our spiritual nature.

A deep reverence for nature is the starting point for our work to combine the imaginative and the analytical, the symbolic and the literal - the artist and the scientist. Yet as scientist and artist we find ourselves in a paradoxical situation because the concepts of natural science are extremely narrow. On the one hand, we observe nature under a lens, and on the other we see the meaning of things too precious to be touched. We suggest that to know is not enough - knowledge about nature does not fulfill the human need of myth. Our species will not survive on a biodiverse planet if preservation remains wholly a scientific or political concern: the sacred must be restored and knowledge informed with passion.
Why photograph nature?
